What do I need to do about Skills Assessment?

Only the new and some returning participants who will be assigned to U7, U8, U10 and U12 teams are involved with Skills Assessment.  Returning participants' forms indicated whether or not they are required to participate in Skills Assessment.  If your child was signed up to attend a Skills Assessment session, you must make sure they have shin guards and soccer cleats in order to participate in a Skills Assessment session. Exceptions will NOT be made for those without the proper equipment--this is a safety issue.   Children who do not participate in a Skills Assessment session will not be assigned to a team and a partial refund will be issued (refer to the FAQ's for details on this policy).   Check the Teams & Schedules page on the website to confirm your child's session time.  If there are not enough children signed up for a session, they will be rescheduled and you will be contacted with the information, prior to the weekend. There must be a minimum number in a group in order to perform the assessment.  Skills Assessment is not a try out for teams.  Parents and coaches will not be given the scores.  The information is confidential and will be used by the league to build the U7-U12 teams.

What’s going on behind the scenes?

The WSA Board begins the process of putting the teams together for the upcoming season. Every season the Board has the difficult challenge of recruiting HEAD coaches during the team-building phase because there are usually not enough volunteers and/or volunteers change their mind about coaching after submitting applications.   Since we do not have the volunteer resources to try to recruit Head coaches after registration, and it impacts deadlines with vendors, etc., refunds will be issued if there are not enough Head coaches signed up by the final registration date.   Refunds will be issued by March 13, 2010 to those who have not been assigned to U5 - U12 teams (providing WSA received sufficient notification from volunteers who rescind their offer to coach their child's team).

When do the coaches get their team info?

Coaches will receive their team rosters before the Coaches’ meeting (the date is listed on the season’s Calendar of Events, which is available on the Teams & Schedules page of the website).  Uniforms will be distributed to teams prior to the first game day or MiniWee session.

When do the players get called?

The coaches MAY contact parents a few days before the first Saturday practice (or MiniWee session) to inform you of the schedule.  Most coaches will send an email to all parents instead of calling.  They may give you all the information you need in regards to practice times and location. Each coach sets his/her own weekday practice days, time and location. If you the email address on phone on your child's registration form was not legible, you may not be contacted by the coach.  The date, time and location of the first Saturday practice, MiniWee session, team assignment information and coaches’ contact information will all be published on the Teams & Schedules page of the website.  It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to find out their child’s team, coach, and date of first practice or MiniWee session by visiting the website.

How often are practices and games?

Practices are held once or twice a week (days and times to be determined by your child’s coach). WSA does not have access to lit fields for weekday practices.  Games will be on Saturdays--refer to the Teams & Schedules page for details.  There will be no practices for the MiniWee program which begins several weeks after the U5-U12 program.  Parents were encouraged to review the FAQ's before registering their children so they are aware of our policies.  The FAQ's state that WSA cannot accommodate requests for children to switch teams due to conflicts with practice dates/times selected by their coach and refunds will not be issued.    WSA cannot accommodate requests submitted after registration for MiniWee players to be placed on the same team.  Requests must be made when the registration forms are submitted; it is an administrative burden to try to do this after registration so please do not send emails with team placement requests.

What else does my child need?

The U5 – U12 registration fee includes: complete uniform (jersey, shorts, socks) and an end of season award.  The MiniWee registration fee includes jersey, ball and end of season award.

Parents must purchase shin guards and soccer cleats (this is applicable to ALL age groups).  Parents must also purchase a size 3 ball for U5 – U8 participants, size 4 ball for U10 – U12 participants.

The season is about to begin and I have not been contacted by my child's coach. What should I do?

Please do not panic if you see teams practicing and you have not been contacted by your child’s coach.  Not all teams begin at the same time. The MiniWee program does not begin until several weeks after the U5 - U12 program begins.  Some coaches may be out of town, the email address or contact information on the registration form may be illegible--these are a few reasons why you may not have been contacted. To find out your child’s team, coach, and first practice information visit the Teams & Schedules page.  Please check the Age Group chart to determine the age group your child belongs to before viewing the Team Assignments.

Please remember…..

WSA is a parent-based, all-volunteer organization established to provide a positive experience for the children. You can help make this a more positive experience by volunteering!

The deadline for requesting refunds is published on the Teams & Schedules page.  The general policy is that there will be no refunds; however, the Board reserves the right to make decisions on a case by case basis and all refunds granted will be subject to a non-refundable $20 administrative fee.
